Job sites and getting there in Dortmund
Dortmund spreads its job sites across the whole city. To the north-east lies the Westfalenhütte with the hot-dip coating lines of thyssenkrupp Steel, the Amazon-Logistikzentrum DTM2 and the REWE-Frischezentrum; to the north the Dortmunder Hafen with its container terminal. To the south lie the Wilopark, PHOENIX West and the Westfalenhallen, to the east the KHS plant and Dortmund Airport.
Many jobs do not lead into Dortmund itself at all. Bayer in Bergkamen, Aurubis and the REMONDIS Lippewerk in Lünen, Rain Carbon in Castrop-Rauxel and the Kraftwerk Datteln 4 lie 20 to 30 kilometres away. For a crew with a van, what counts then is how quickly it gets from the accommodation onto the A2, the A45 or the B236.
It gets tight in ways you can plan for. The upgrade of the B1 into the six-lane A40 runs over 9.5 kilometres with thirteen bridge structures, the Westfalenhallen are building two new halls plus a congress centre, and the railway usually bundles its line closures at the Dortmund hub into the North Rhine-Westphalian summer holidays.
